Cup of Tea

Believe it or not, world-wide tea is more popular than coffee; water remains in first place.  My first awareness of this beverage was during childhood.  Any time there was sickness, a little bag of black tea was brewed and served with honey.  Years later,  my serious interest in tea was reignited following a trip to England .

After lots of research and experimenting, I discovered there are numerous tea blends; you’re sure to find one that appeals to your taste buds.  Part of the discovery was learning that it is so much more than a little bag of black tea served with honey when you’re sick.  During the experiments, it became very apparent that various types of tea require different brewing techniques for optimum flavor.  Initially, this can be a challenge.   But when the goal of a perfect brew has been achieved, it creates a mood of celebration.

With so much variety in the available tea blends, it should come as no surprise that there are countless thoughts and ideas on the best brewing method.  There are four basic types of tea: black, green, oolong and white tea; there are over 2,000 different blends.  Each type is better when brewed using methods for that specific tea.  The most frequently purchased in America is black tea and this is one method that works:

1)      Start with cold filtered water and bring to a boil

2)      While the water is heating, preheat the teapot.  Fill the teapot with hot tap water,  wait a few minutes and drain

3)      Measure 1 tsp of loose tea for each cup of tea into the teapot

4)      Pour a small amount of hot water over tea leaves, allow leaves to open up and   drain immediately

5)      Fill teapot with boiling water, cover and brew 4 to 5 minutes

6)      Pour tea, serve and relax

If you need to keep it warm, transfer to an insulated pot.  If you are using good quality tea, it can be infused three to five times.  Simply add boiling water and let it steep; with each use, shorten the time it steeps.

Researchers have conducted numerous studies to evaluate the health benefits of tea.  Many of these studies have proven that the antioxidant poly phenols in tea may significantly reduce the risk of ovarian cancer as well as gastric, esophageal and skin cancers.  Other research has determined that poly phenols help in the prevention of blood clots and may help lower cholesterol levels.  All teas contain these beneficial poly phenols and this beverage actually ranks as high as or higher than many fruits and vegetables.  It has also been determined that the best results are obtained when brewing for three to five minutes.  When considering the health benefits, it is important to note that there has been no scientific evidence that bottled green tea drinks help with weight loss.

But, one thing we know for sure: we can celebrate the proven health benefits.  We can relax and enjoy the aroma and taste of our favorite blend.  How about planning a High Tea for the tea drinkers’ ultimate pleasure?

Is green tea really more beneficial than black tea?  If you’re a tea drinker, you have probably heard of the health benefits of tea, in general.  You may know that tea is a healthier choice than coffee or soft drinks.  But what about the comparison between green tea and black tea?

Health Benefits of Green Tea

First, let’s explore the difference in health benefits between green tea and black tea.  Many studies have been completed and many are ongoing to determine the effects of antioxidants (polyphenols) on major diseases as well as the aging process.  Overall, there has been consensus that the antioxidants have a positive effect on health and well being.  Because of the fermentation process of black tea, this tea has fewer antioxidants than green tea.  Green tea is loaded with polyphenols which is a huge plus in the health benefit arena.

Ongoing research into the health benefits of green tea has been optimistic.  The studies have revealed positive effects on cancer, heart disease and other health conditions.  It has also been discovered that polyphenols appear to slow down the aging process; for example, skin wrinkling appears to slow down.

When considering health benefits, it is important to note that polyphenols can be found in many fruits and vegetables as well as green tea; and remember, polyphenols are also present in other teas at lower levels.

Another well-known benefit of green tea is weight loss and weight maintenance.  For those with serious weight issues, this can be an important health benefit.

Reducing caffeine is important for various health conditions.  Any type of tea has less caffeine than coffee, but here’s the good news:  green tea has about half the caffeine found in black tea!

GREEN TEA AND YOUR TEETHGreen Tea and Healthy Smile

One visible advantage of green tea can be found when you smile.  Before I discovered green tea, the black tea had stained my teeth.  Of course, whitening strips can resolve the stains.  Drinking green tea is a much easier solution.  So, again green tea is the winner.

Green tea has more oxidants, less caffeine, is almost stain-free and has a variety of taste treats.  However, when it comes to taste preference, individual taste buds play a huge role.  Unfortunately, in the past, green tea was known for its unpleasant taste.  Not true now!  There are many loose green teas that result in a delicious light sweet cup of tea.

You owe it to yourself to give green tea a second chance; try the Apricot Green Tea or Spiced Green Tea.  Do some experimenting and you are sure to find a green tea that suits your personal taste.
